It's often assumed that art is arbitrary pretension. Some look at Jackson Pollock and then at a monkey handling a brush and see no difference. These people might have a case when it comes to Mighty Fine Arts Gallery's new show. We don't mean that the art -- by Houston's Kelly Moran and Ada, Oklahoma's Kate Rivers -- is overly stuffy, but the title they came up with: Pathway Deluge. Seems complicated and smart, huh? Means something powerful, right? No, not really. According to Moran's Web site, it "was derived from coordinating a list of favorite words and combining them to come up with an open-ended, multi-interpretative title." Translation: It sounded arty. The work featured in Pathway Deluge, though, is quite reflective. Moran is a printmaker, and her work traps everyday scenes inside compelling backgrounds to narrate a story, "out of some arcane mid-century text." Rivers uses cartography "to capture and contain identity." It's too much for me already, but I'm an art oaf. Pathway Deluge runs through August 3. Mighty Fine Arts is located at 419 N. Tyler St., and the gallery is open on the weekends from noon to 5 p.m., or call for an appointment at 214-942-5241.
Saturdays, Sundays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: July 5. Continues through Aug. 3, 2008
