Nothing says "Texas is a melting pot" like the Czechfest...er, I mean Westfest, held annually in West, Texas, to raise money for community projects. (Think the Texas State Fair with kolaches at every turn and polka dancing instead of roller-coaster rides.) Westfest has Brave Combo, Grammy winners from Denton, on the bill again this year, and their polka music is said to be "nuclear." Not that into polka? Country artists Donna Beckham, Branded Heart and Wayward Sons are also scheduled. There are Legos, puppets and ponies (oh my!) for the kiddies too. But, honestly, it's the food that really gets me going. What could be better than sausage on a stick...or in a boat? No need to worry about all those calories either, as the 5K Kolache Fun Run--an oxymoron if you ask me--takes place on Saturday. Get yourself some culture this Labor Day weekend, starting at 6 p.m. Friday when the festival crowns a new Miss Westfest. Fun continues Saturday and Sunday at the West Fair and Rodeo grounds. Ticket prices range from $4 to $10, and you have to pay two or three bucks for parking too. Call 254-826-5058 or visit westfest.com.
