Dr. Moreau pays Fort Worth a house call

There's something about mad scientists pushing the boundaries of science that makes for really interesting literature and theater. These stories raise the question: How far can science go? More important, they ask the question: How far should science go? The Island of Dr. Moreau grew out of the debate over animal vivisection among Britain's scientific community in the late 19th century. "Hmmm, should we cut a living animal open in order to study how its body functions, or shouldn't we?" Dame Pamela Anderson would offer a resounding no. Dr. Moreau, however, did not share her moral compunction. He sliced and diced his way through animal after animal in his obsession to make them more human. In the end, Moreau learned that you can take the beast out of the jungle, but you can't take the jungle out of the beast. Or maybe it's the other way around. Come see for yourself as the Hip Pocket Theatre puts on its stage adaptation Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through September 28. Showtime is 8:15 p.m. nightly.
