Dallas is experiencing something of a renaissance in the arts, partially due to an upswing in the local gallery scene. The influx of galleries into the Dragon Street and Design District area has given the city thousands of square feet of new space to appreciate up-and-coming work in a variety of media, and has created buzz on a national level. Galleries in Deep Ellum, such as Kettle Art and The Public Trust, play a vital role in keeping the area relevant as a destination for Dallas culture junkies. And now, smack in between the Design District and Deep Ellum, the Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas (CADD) is opening a new, state-of-the-art facility that will bring the thriving Dallas gallery community into the heart of downtown. The CADD Art Lab, 1608 Main St., is a 4,000-square-foot space that features two galleries and room for innovative programming on contemporary art. Art Lab is a collaboration between the 11 CADD member galleries, including the aforementioned Public Trust, as well as Conduit Gallery, Gerald Peters and others, and will open with an all-day event, Open House: In the Lab, starting at 11 a.m. Saturday. The inaugural event will include the first Art Lab exhibition, Indexing the Moment, as well as an artist lecture at 2 p.m., a reception, and tours until 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public; for more information, visit caddallas.net.
Sat., Sept. 20, 11 a.m.-8 p.m., 2008
