Though shamelessly beloved by Texans for Fletcher's corny dogs, fried Twinkies and Ferris wheels, the State Fair is more than a place where calories and acrophobia are irrelevant. If you make it past the midway and ginormous indoor food court (you have to anyway if you're going to find the best rides and most awesomely deep-fried desserts) you'll discover a world of culture and history. Example: The Women's Museum on the fairgrounds will screen clips from A Fair to Remember, the Allen and Cynthia Mondell-directed documentary that explores the fascinating history of the State Fair of Texas since its inception in 1886. Visit the Second Floor of The Women's Museum from noon to 5 p.m. daily during the full run of the State Fair of Texas (through October 19). Visit mediaprojects.org or thewomensmuseum.org.
