Excellent Adventure

Gregory mines the saucy side of history

Reading about the imagined private lives and inner workings of historical figures is a lot of fun, and when I get that smidgen of doubt brought on by the literary disrespect of such work, it's all OK, because these books may be bodice heavers...but they're well-researched bodice heavers. And yes, I had a hard time buying that Henry VIII would just let his former wife's sister walk out with his kid to be raised by a family whose patriarch was forbidden from coming anywhere within his presence on pain of death. But it was still fun to pretend. If you want to meet the woman who thought up this and other stories, be at the Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane at 7 p.m. Tuesday, where author Philippa Gregory (The Other Boleyn Girl, The Queen's Fool, etc.) will speak and sign her newest, The Other Queen. More than 1,000 people turned up last time she came through, so be sure to get there early to grab a good seat. Call 214-523-2270 or visit cornerstoneworship.org.
