Kind of a Big Deal

Howie Mandel has had several careers in the entertainment biz. After a few years as a stand-up comic, he became world famous with his role as Dr. Fiscus on the groundbreaking, underrated medical drama, St. Elsewhere. It spawned the careers of a shitload of actors--Mark Harmon, Ed Begley Jr., Denzel Washington etc. If you don't remember it, too bad for you. It was, in a word, "awesome." Howie also has the dubious honor of being the voice of "Gizmo" in Gremlins. Another iconic achievement. Now he is famous once again as the host of the popular game show, Deal or No Deal. Will his glory never end? Howie is an entertainment multi-tasker of the highest caliber, and he shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, he returns to his first love, stand-up, 7 p.m. Sunday at McFarlin Auditorium on the SMU campus. It is billed as a clean, family show but don't let that keep you away. If Howie's act is anything like what I saw on An Evening at the Improv when I was 13, it will be a life-changing performance. Tickets start at $25 and are available through ticketmaster.com. Be there.
Sun., Nov. 23, 7 p.m., 2008
