King Hughley

D.L. breaks the news at the Improv

Call me crazy, but I think the short-lived series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip was one of the best things to ever happen on primetime television. Apparently I'm alone in this sentiment, because the show tanked and was canceled after one season. While it lasted, it showcased D.L. Hughley in one of my favorite roles as Simon Stiles, a cast member on the fictional, SNL-based sketch comedy show Studio 60. Simon grew up in South Central Los Angeles amid gang violence and poverty before making his way into the Yale School of Drama and eventually a successful career in comedy. Sounds familiar. In fact, it's pretty close to D.L.'s real-life story, which saw him rising from the same gang-ridden streets to a star of The Original Kings of Comedy and his namesake sitcom, The Hughleys. He now has his own HBO special, a comedic news show on CNN and is also the host of Def Comedy Jam. Oh, and he still takes his stand-up on tour. D.L. performs at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday; 6:30, 9:30 and 11:30 p.m. Saturday; and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Addison Improv, 4980 Belt Line Road. Tickets are $30. Call 972-404-8501 or visit improv.com.
