The Boiled Tortugas

Sip turtle soup at Holly Johnson Gallery

"Is it good turtle soup or merely the mock?" That's a line from Cole Porter's "At Long Last Love," written in 1938. Well to be sure, I had to research what the hell is actually involved in turtle soup. According to my Google search, my instincts were correct, and it's exactly what it implies. Oddly enough, definitions for "mock turtle soup" were also provided...I never would have guessed "brains and organ meat" could be a cheaper substitute for turtle. Glad to know. Now to figure out what it has to do with art. Davis Aylsworth's exhibition of bright and dramatic paintings, titled Is it the real turtle soup? (a nod to the Porter tune), is on display at Holly Johnson Gallery, 1411 Dragon St., through December 24. The homage makes sense as Aylsworth compares his artistic process to a musical theater production. See how the art plays out as the gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Nov. 22. Continues through Dec. 24, 2008
