Arc Angels, Electric Touch

Friday, November 28, at House of Blues

Electric Touch, the eponymous debut album by the Austin-based four-piece that has the pleasure of touring with fellow Austinite Charlie Sexton's reunited Arc Angels for this short Texas-wide jaunt, reaches a level of sophistication to which most new(ish) bands can only aspire.

In opener "Love in Our Hearts," lead singer Shane Lawlor's gritty voice—easily comparable to that of a young Robert Plant or Mick Jagger—commands the listener's immediate attention: "I don't want no one unless I got you." A mix of blues, Britpop and rock and roll, it's a perfect introduction to Electric Touch, the band and the album.

No matter how poetic the lyrics get, though, the music of Electric Touch never loses its intensity and sensual undercurrent. Electric Touch also manages to capably capture the band's lively stage presence—quite an impressive feat for a group that has been together for barely a year.

these guys are amazing! i had no idea that rock n'roll could rock any harder/rockier until i heard this batch of talented young men. Austin scootin' blues rock meets throaty Brit "tude". how come nobody has done this before?!?!?! that old fart, who left a comment on this board about how these guys are basically mediocre at best, can go eat it; obviously that guy has no idea what he's talking about! on top of all that pure, uninhibited talent....these guys have style! my girlfriend, cassie, said that if i were to die tomorrow, she'd probably try to meet with the lead guitarist...i mean, i understand; there's no way i could ever pull off a leather jacket/flowery blouse combo!!! kudos on a great show, be sure to keep the jams comin'.

I thought they were OK, but it seemed they'd practiced their posing almost as much as their instruments. Their music was passable, and they definitely had the rock star vibe going, but their music lacked a level of substance that age and time might correct, if they stay in the hunt long enough. I mean, does the world really need another pop band with the lead guitar dude doing all the typical lead guitar things, and the singer doing all the typical lead singer things. It's all been done. having said all that, for a young band, they were tight as hell and I enjoyed the music, but I didn't like it enough to want to see them again or buy the CD. Wouldn't even bother to download it. The contrast between Electric Touch and the Arc Angels was dramatic. Now there's a band for the ages. Two hours of bliss. Just wish they'd get off their asses and cut a live CD, or do a collection of blues classics, with their special touch. Now, who wouldn't love to see that?
