Here Comes Solstice Claus

Cathedral of Hope throws a winter celebration

Back when I was a junior-high Bible study regular, the idea of a gay-friendly church holding a winter solstice celebration would have struck me as so inherently blasphemous that I would have completely distanced my right-thinking self from the sodomites and pagans who would attend such an event. Since then, I've moved from church to increasingly liberal church until my family and I ended up at one so open-minded that it actually welcomes gays and works with the charitable folks at Cathedral of Hope, which would have appalled the Supply-Side Jesus of my youth. Now it's disdain for New Age crap like meditation, chanting and a "traditional howl and the drum-driven dance through the Sun and Moon gates" that makes me hesitant. On the other hand, though, there'll be storytelling, theater, music, a chocolate communion, World Bazaar silent auction and possibly a bagpiper. The 16th annual Winter SolstiCelebration begins 6 p.m. Friday at Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Road. Tickets are $5, or $3 for children under 13 and seniors over 65. Canned meat, fish, saltine crackers or winter outerwear donations are welcome. Call 214-261-5599 or visit earthrhythms.org.
Fri., Dec. 19, 6 p.m., 2008
