Power Up

The Webb gets high on posters

The Webb Gallery in Waxahachie has been a haven for outsider, folk and just plain strange art for more than two decades. If you make the 30-mile drive south of Dallas to this wonderland of esoterica, you are guaranteed a banquet for the senses. Gallery owners Bruce and Julie Webb are on a mission to bring us the most unusually beautiful artifacts in existence. Their current exhibit, Higher Power, is a collection of some of the best poster and print art in the country [And a great way to pick up a holiday gift for the music lover in your life, FYI--Ed.]. Artists from several states are being showcased, but in true Webb Gallery style, this a Texas-heavy exhibit. That's what makes the Webb Gallery a true treasure. If there is a weird, wonderful, what-the-hell object anywhere in Texas, chances are it will eventually find its way into the obsessive hands of the Webbs. Their lair is adorned with old carnival banners, Masonic memorabilia, folk art treasures and just outright disturbing work by self-taught artists culled from every dark corner of the south. In other words, it's paradise. Head down to 209-211 W. Franklin in Waxahachie for Higher Power and wallow in wonderful weirdness. The show runs through March 1, 2009. Visit Webbartgallery.com for details.
Saturdays, Sundays. Starts: Dec. 13. Continues through March 1, 2008
