Hootie And The Other Fish

Edwin McCain visits the HOB

I mostly remember Edwin McCain from his 1995 hit "Solitude," which used a vocal cameo from Darius Rucker to help him ride Hootie and the Blowfish's substantial frat-rock coattails into semi-fame. But even for the month or three I was into Hootie when I was 14, I pretty much thought this guy sucked, despite the video for "Solitude" following the always successful mid-'90s video formula--flickering, dimly lit shots of misguided youths alternating with the band over-playing in an empty theater or school auditorium--to a T. I don't remember much about him after that, though a quick Google search reveals he had a huge hit with 1997's "I'll Be," countless douchey cover versions of which can be found on YouTube. (Here's a note to all you high school dudes with your cutaway acoustics and bleached blond hair: Hide those webcams and digital cameras, because in 10 years you're gonna find all those "awesome" videos you made really embarrassing.) If you're really into white-boy blues, however, feel free to check out Edwin McCain 7 p.m. Friday at the House of Blues. Tickets are $20 to $50. Visit ticketmaster.com.
