Artists protest gas drilling in Fort Worth

For the past several years many residents of Fort Worth and other North Texas municipalities have accumulated vast amounts of new bling thanks to a windfall of natural gas money afforded them by mineral rights and new horizontal drilling techniques. Some locals have taken issue with the drilling and all that accompanies it, however, citing intrusive natural gas rigs, new pipelines through neighborhoods and the fear of geological disasters such as sinkholes. Buzzworms in the Backyard is an exhibition of protest art directed at the energy companies and government entities allowing the harvest of resources from the Barnett Shale, the vast geologic formation that lies beneath portions of the metroplex and contains a buttload of natural gas. Now in its second year, the exhibit opens Friday and runs through January 30 at the Fort Worth Community Art Center, 1300 Gendy St. Let's hope there's a piece lampooning Barnett Shale shill Tommy Lee Jones, who did a series of commercials for Chesapeake Energy earlier this year with taglines like "Let's get behind the Barnett." I think Chesapeake's actually more interested in getting inside of it than behind it, but then again, a man like Tommy Lee Jones couldn't possibly mince words, right? The FWCAC is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Call 817-738-1938 or visit fwcac.com.
