Money or sex?--probably isn't the worst decision anyone's had to make, but in this little Czech film (with English subtitles) it means big trouble for, you guessed it, one beautiful woman. Beauty in Trouble (Kraska v nesnazich) tells the story of Marcela, a young mother of two who is forced to choose between a man who can provide for her family and her down-and-out husband who offers mind-blowing sex but not much else. This film festival favorite comes from the Czech power duo of director Jan Hrebejk and writer Petr Jarchovsky, with music by Glen Hansard, best known for giving the most endearing Academy Award acceptance speech of all time (last year for his song from Once). Beauty in Trouble has received considerable buzz since its debut in 2006 and is now getting local screen time, showing this Friday through Sunday as part of Magnolia at the Modern (3200 Darnell St. in Fort Worth), an ongoing series featuring critically acclaimed films. Tickets are $8.50 or $6.50 for Modern members. Advance sales begin two hours before each show. For more information, visit themodern.org/magnolia.html.
