Guys can earn major points with Almost, Maine

The description for Almost, Maine probably loses 95 percent of the Y-chromosome set at "romantic comedy," but when the press material includes boasts like "delightful," "utterly endearing," "whimsical" and "the perfect date play," it's clearly aimed squarely at females. I've endured more than my share of rom-com theatrical productions and can assure you they're far more trying for guys than their cinematic counterparts. In a movie theater, at least you can't offend a cast member if you accidentally fall asleep or roll your eyes at a sickeningly cute moment—and this production promises plenty of 'em. Directed by Michael Serrecchia, Almost, Maine stars B.J. Cleveland, Marisa Diatolevi, Becca Shiver and Ted Wold playing 20 different characters "falling in and out of love" (their Pure Prairie League reference, not mine) under the Northern Lights in a fictional Northeastern town. It opens Friday and plays through February 8, with an additional Valentine's Day performance February 14. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays at Theatre Arlington, 305 W. Main St., Arlington. Tickets are $17 with discounts for seniors, students and groups. Call 817-261-9628 or visit theatrearlington.org.
Sundays, 2 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Thursdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sat., Feb. 14. Starts: Jan. 11. Continues through Feb. 8, 2009
