According to Alexander La Riviere, proprietor of Faber's Cyclery and a bicycle accident investigator, this country's technological and social evolution parallels that of the bicycle, as these "land flyers" gave man the sensation of flight and liberation that led him to build an airplane and yearn for political freedom. His theory, recounted in Susan O'Malley's and Alex Clausen's video short Desire to Fly, sounds a bit more convincing than the theory spouted by the Simpsons character in the abandoned Spirograph factory, who paralleled the rise of juvenile delinquency with the decline in Spirograph use. The video, with other artworks that "document or alter the idea of a protagonist" from Wendy Red Star, Kara Hearn, Jonn Herschend and others, is part of the Protagonist exhibition, on display Wednesdays through Saturdays through February 28 at And/Or Gallery, 4221 Bryan St. Suite B.
