Television shows and movies about friendships between ladies seem to be the new trend lately. You have the film adaptation of the Sex and the City series (and possibly a sequel in the works), The Women, Lipstick Jungle and the dead-as-a-doornail Cashmere Mafia (come on, we knew that one never had a chance). I have a secret though; it's always been a trend. Steel Magnolias happens to be the old-school version of them all. Personally one of my all-time favorites, this story takes place in a small Southern town where everyone knows everyone and everything about everyone. It follows the lives of six women friends, M'lynn, Truvy, Ouiser, Annelle, Shelby and Clairee, through weddings, pregnancy, marriages, illness, and life's daily disappointments and surprises. Steel Magnolias is one of those rare plays that will make you laugh and cry all at the same time. The stage version of Steel Magnolias runs from through Sunday at The Richardson Theatre Centre (718 Canyon Creek Square). Showtimes are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.
