Go Ahead. Take It!

"Take a Hike! For Your Community" is the greatest name ever for a fund-raiser. It starts as an insult, then softens the blow with an explanation. Other groups should try this formula too: "Take a Long Walk Off a Short Pier! For Swimming Safety," "Get Bent! For Scoliosis Research" or "Go Take a Flying F#@% at the Moon! For Science." But there's more to "Take a Hike!" than a great name. Each participant gets to hike the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary's half-mile, mile and 1.5-mile paths; try the ropes course (featuring a 110-foot rock climb, 500-foot zip line and power pole); visit the museum; and raise funds for the partner organization of his or her choice. Those charities include Big Brothers Big Sisters, Samaritan Inn and Collin County Meals on Wheels. If that's not enough, they've thrown in a continental breakfast, entertainment, giveaways and contests too—all for $20 per adult, $5 per child or $40 per family. The Heard Museum is at 1 Nature Place in McKinney. Call 972-562-5566 or visit heardmuseum.org.
