Blurry Vision

John Holt Smith shows off in Fort Worth

Fort Worth artist John Holt Smith's paintings start with him taking cross-sections of a photograph and manipulating them into colorful striated patterns, which he then copies with his paintbrush onto shiny aluminum panels. The resulting paintings look somewhat like stills from the colorful video sequences the late Jeremy Blake designed for the film Punch Drunk Love, though you could see almost anything in these images, from black holes to sunsets and geologic strata. John Holt Smith: Opiates & Oculi collects two series of Smith's paintings, with one derived from pictures of poppies and the other, the Oculus paintings, based on photographs of the human eye. The exhibit hangs through May 2 at William Campbell Contemporary Art, 4935 Byers Ave. in Fort Worth. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Call 817-737-9566 or visit williamcampbellcontemporaryart.com.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: March 28. Continues through May 2, 2009
