Sin City

"Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven." (Genesis 19: 24-15) "Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." (Jude 1:7) Wait. Not that Gomorrah? Well, sort of. The 2008 Italian film Gomorrah, set in the Naples crime society Camorra, plays this weekend at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The title is a spin-off of the dire biblical parable, but the film trades criminality for sins of the flesh in a modern world where no good deed (or human impulse) goes unpunished. Weaving in that subtext, Camorra is a possible result of a decimated Gomorrah--a city without God--years after the fall. Last year, the film won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and Best Film at the European Film Awards. Gomorrah screens at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday, and 2 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Modern. Tickets are $8.50, $6.50 for members. Visit themodern.org for more information.
