Known as the sport of kings, Thoroughbred horse racing has a devoted following, but for real fans, it's about more than just the Triple Crown. Sure, you want to get started on shopping for this year's Kentucky Derby hat, but before that time comes, you better pick your pony and spend a day at the races. The 2009 Spring Thoroughbred Season starts this weekend, and the folks at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie (1000 Lone Star Parkway) have big plans, including the Lone Star Music Series, which kicks it all off with live concert performances by The Randy Rogers Band (Friday) and The Beach Boys (Saturday) following the last races of the day ($5 with paid general admission). Live races start at 6:35 p.m. weekdays and 1:35 p.m. weekends. Admission is $5 to $27. Call 972-263-RACE or visit lonestarpark.com.
