Remember how Deep Ellum is dead? You wouldn't have known it a few weeks ago during the Deep Ellum Arts Festival. Streets were blocked off, pedestrian traffic was heavy, and it almost looked like the days before it became a cliche to decry the death of the district. And it's a real coup for culture when crowds come out for--of all things--a celebration of the arts. It just goes to show that you can plug a Gap or a Starbucks into any neighborhood, but nothing spells a community rebirth like a thriving arts scene. The Oak Cliff Art Crawl is another demonstration of that, as galleries like Cube Creative, Ice House Cultural Center, Soda Gallery, Decorazon, Bishop Arts Studio Co-Op and Mighty Fine Arts open their doors for this first-time event that celebrates the creative influences powering the renewal of the Bishop Arts and Oak Cliff art scene. The up and coming galleries are joining forces to display art in every medium, feature live music and create an atmosphere that shows off the community as a lively venue for both burgeoning and historical culture. The Oak Cliff Art Crawl is sponsored by Bike Friendly Oak Cliff and photopol.us and will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at various venues in Oak Cliff. Visit photopol.us for more information.
