The smell of turkey legs wafts through the air. In the distance you hear the tones of a hammered dulcimer conjuring hazy musical memories. The playful sounds of children surround your feet. You look down to smile at the young 'uns but instead of a happy 8-year-old, you see a...is that a freaking leprechaun? "Where the hell am I?" you ask yourself. You are at the Scarborough Renaissance Festival, or just "Scarborough Faire" to most. Since 1981, Scarborough Faire has been a haven for jugglers, Jezebels and just plain folks who want to kick it really old school. Where else in North Texas can you experience the magic and mystery of the 1500s but without that pesky syphilis and bubonic plague all over the place? Well, I'm not sure about that first one, but I promise you won't contract the Black Death this year. In true Ren Fest style, Scarborough is a virtual time machine back to a simpler, sweatier era when men were men and women did all the work. There are jousting shows and period artisans crafting their wares and about 10 billion turkey legs just waiting to be enjoyed. Lords and ladies, get your Renaissance Faire derrières down Interstate 35 South and take exit 399A in Waxahachie for a grand olde time.
