Tiny Music

I used to have a maroon plastic ukulele. I never learned to play "Tiptoe Through the Tulips," but it sure was a lot of fun to bring out at parties--invariably some drunk guy would start strumming and strolling around like some cat from the '20s. The instrument met an untimely demise when it was sat on, and I've been feeling guilty with a need to finally learn that Tiny Tim song ever since. Well, it must be my lucky day because the Lone Star Ukulele Festival and Music Camp is coming to Texas. They're offering activities for both beginners (me) and musicians. There'll be uke classes for swing, blues, Hawaiian and Tin Pan Alley styles, and other classes on Hawaiian lap steel guitar, songwriting and even hula dancing. Pull your ukulele out of the closet and come on down to make some happy music (there'll even be jam groups). The festival runs from Thursday through Saturday at the Metropolitan Community Church, 2735 Villa Creek, No. 290 in Farmers Branch. Visit lonestarukefest.com for more information.
