Fiddle Sticks

Americans became more familiar with Eastern-European Jewish life than many would have thought possible with the success of the Tony Award winning musical Fiddler on the Roof, which hit Broadway in 1964. An instant hit, it filled theaters again and again and held the title for longest running Broadway musical for 10 years (until Grease surpassed it). Songs from the show, such as "Tradition," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," and "If I Were a Rich Man," have long been woven into the fabric of our vernacular. Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, the play tells the tale of Tevye the milkman, the father of five daughters and his struggle with the battle between tradition and change. Now, a national tour makes a stop in Dallas Tuesday through Sunday, May 24, starring renowned Israeli actor Chaim Topol in his last go-round as Tevye. Topol was the original Tevye in the London production of the play in 1967, and also in the original film adaptation in 1971. Don't miss your last chance to see this legend in his signature role as the play runs at the Music Hall at Fair Park. Tickets are $20 to $80. Call 214-691-7200 or visit dallassummermusicals.org.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: May 19. Continues through May 24, 2009
