Songs in the Grass

I have a vague memory of attending one of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's outdoor performances at Flagpole Hill as a little kid, though it's possible I'm conflating the memory with some other grown-up thing my parents dragged me to at the city park. All I remember is that I spent the whole time with friends waging a fierce speargrass battle against my brother. Much more recently, I attended a DSO performance with new conductor Jaap van Zweden, and it left a much more vivid impression. Take your kids to see the free outdoor Memorial Day Concert. Even if they're not into classical music, there's always speargrass. The concert, concluding with a fireworks display, is 8 to 9 p.m. Monday at Flagpole Hill, 8007 E. Northwest Highway; rain-out site is at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, 2301 Flora St. Visit dallassymphony.com.
Mon., May 25, 8-9 p.m., 2009
