Morgan Taylor, creator of the children's music character Gustafer Yellowgold, is an inspiring example of the good things that can happen when you stop worrying about marketability and just create things that you love. I had the chance to interview him for the Observer's music section last year, and I still find inspiration in the story of how he struggled for years in rock bands trying to craft the perfect radio-ready hit single. Then, during the creation of a cartoon picture book, he decided to take another listen to some of his old, silly songs about tuxedo-wearing pterodactyls and a character who comes from the sun. Even as he resisted the opportunity to dumb down his characters for a shot at a television show, Taylor's creation grew in popularity. Little wonder, as his soothing voice and gentle acoustic guitar are perfectly suited to the whimsically funny cartoon characters on his three Gustafer Yellowgold DVDs. Taylor performs Gustafer songs at 6 p.m. Saturday at Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. Call 972-252-ARTS or visit irvingartscenter.com. Admission is $6.
Fri., July 3, 6 p.m., 2009
