A Dish Called Wanda

Her voice walks a full block ahead of her body, sort of comforting in the same way that Fran Drescher's voice is a knife in your brain. But Wanda Sykes is a unique entertainer in many ways. Let's forget about that little bugaboo at the White House Press Corps Dinner for a second. (Hey, I thought it was funny.) She made Inside the NFL actually watchable, she's won a buttload of Emmys and, most important, she is freaking hilarious! Her role as Biggie Shorty in Pootie Tang was a masterpiece of comedic genius; she made that already ridiculous movie "ridiculouser." Sykes can be topical and completely off-the-wall at the same time, a combination of truth and silliness that adds up to a recipe for classic comedy. She's definitely come a long way since her days as a writer/performer on the legendary Chris Rock Show, becoming her own comedic force to be reckoned with. So far she shows no sign of slowing down or "lightening up." Come witness for yourself when she brings her stand-up show to town. Wanda Sykes Live hits the Nokia Theatre at 8 p.m. Sunday. Visit Nokialivedfw.com for tickets and details. You'll laugh your "pootie tang" off.
