I remember when Legally Blonde came out in theaters a several years ago, and the movie's heroine, Elle Woods, became a cultural phenomenon for putting her perky little nose to the grindstone, suiting up in pink, and doing something that most women could never dream of...being feminine and succeeding in law school. Yuck. I think that the real fairly tale here is that Woods, upon graduation, would find a job. As a lawyer. Because perhaps the film inspired one too many sorority girls to give up their silly forays into Neiman Marcus and head to law school, and now the law market is a little on the saturated side. But fear not...indefatigable Elle has cute pair of pink pumps that'll hold her up right through the unemployment line! Despite its seriously patronizing premise, Legally Blonde was a monster success that eventually spawned a musical. And although it's not going to win any awards from the feminists, the musical succeeds for the same reason the film did--it's a fun, effervescent romp. Turn off your brain, maybe take your favorite little girl (who will enjoy the girl power message even if it's a tad misguided), and enjoy this fluffy musical romp for what it is--light summer entertainment that will leave you thinking, however briefly, about signing up for those LSATs. Legally Blonde The Musical runs Tuesday through August 2 at the Music Hall at Fair Park. Tickets are $25 to $85. Visit dallassummermusicals.org.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: July 21. Continues through Aug. 2, 2009
