DiscoveryLP (XL)By Michael LopezPublished on July 15, 2009 at 9:07am"Orange Shirt," the first track off the debut album, LP, from indie electro-pop duo Discovery, sums up perfectly the funky electro-pop sound the band is striving to achieve. DIY laptop-pop drums and synths are greeted right away by light, cherubic, indie-rock vocals—a kooky amalgamation that works right from the get-go. Discovery (better known as a side project created by Vampire Weekend keyboardist/producer Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot vocalist Wes Miles) cranks out staccato synths and eight-bit instrumentals that coalesce into a light, summer-ready album. It's perfect, then, that the album is being released smack dab in the middle of the hottest part of the year, a willing soundtrack for pool parties and barbecues. "So Insane," the album's pinnacle, illustrates just how complex LP is, despite its simple premise. The song changes tempo from a force of jazzy pop synths to a fuzzy, thumping crawl. As dissonant as it sounds, the song is a flawless testament to the ingenuity and originality of Batmanglij and Miles—two of indie rock's more ingenious and fearless minds.
