Fade to Black
Honor the influences of black filmmakers in the Southwest area at the 7th annual Dallas Black Film Festival. The weekend event appears promising considering past winners, including 2008's Circle of Spiders: the Deliverance by Clifton McCurry and 2007's Hustler's Guide to the Entertainment Industry by Hotep. The festival begins with independent films and filmmakers from the '30s to the present and starts 8 p.m. Friday at the Magnolia Lounge in Fair Park. The children's film festival starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the Liberation Film Festival at 1:30 p.m. and new black independent films at 6:30 p.m. Dallas' black film festival contest begins at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and winners will be announced later that evening. Categories for the festival include "best independent film or video" and "best children's film or video." There's also a black movie trivia contest on Sunday as well as a circa '20s to '40s classic black film festival from noon to 6:30 p.m. Day and weekend passes start at $10 and go to $25.
