Ghost in the Kitchen

Have you cooked every recipe in Julia Child's famous cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking? Probably not, unless you are Julie Powell, who probably doesn't read the Dallas Observer. But Powell will be in Dallas on Wednesday as part of the Julie & Julia movie, dinner and book-signing event hosted by the DMA's Arts & Letters Live Series. Although not nearly as famous as Child, Powell gained media attention and a fan base with her blog, also titled "Julie and Julia," in which she followed her own real-life, year-long journey, cooking from the famous chef's recipe book in an attempt to creatively jump-start her marital and working life. Powell wrote a memoir that elaborated on the blog, inspiring what is now a movie that follows the parallel lives of these two foodies. A movie screening will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at AMC NorthPark preceding the Wednesday book signing. Although Julia Child passed away last year, she will be at the event in spirit: a meal inspired by Child's cooking flair will be served from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the museum's restaurant Seventeen Seventeen; the author will take the stage shortly after that. Call 214-922-1818 for reservations.
Wed., July 29, 6 p.m., 2009
