Shorties Watchin' Shorties

Even parents with the most discerning taste in film have been known to sit through mindless movies where animals make fart jokes through their computer-generated mouths. Forget culture, you just want your kids to sit still long enough to justify the 20 bucks you spent on tickets. Or you could skip buying tickets all together and take them to the Modern, where preschoolers can watch international short films such as the seven-minute The Ballad of Mulan and Monkey King Wreaks Havoc in Heaven, which is just long and funny enough for little attention spans. Bigger kids can watch a short documentary about fascinating kids their own age followed by a series of short films from around the world. A silent film about "a couple living on top of a bizarre hourglass and under a tree (who) discover the moon accidentally for the first time" is not exactly your run-of-the-mill cineplex fare. Preteens get three of the more rare Goosebumps short films. Age-appropriate, educational, fun and, oh yeah, free. Yes, please. These and other kid-friendly shorts are screening starting Tuesday at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (3200 Darnell St.) as part of The Modern Kids' Summer Flicks Series.
