Now Serving: The Snake Party

Wednesdays are suppertime at the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary. The Heard boasts the most comprehensive public collection of Texas-native snakes including rattlers, racers and water snakes. Between bellowing, "Ew, gross! COOL!" and bawling, "Poor wittle mousey," you'll get an up-close look at what these serpentine creatures prefer to eat and how they prefer to eat it. (I bet you can guess!) Weekly live snake feedings are at 3 p.m. Wednesdays through August 19. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and children. The event is targeted for youngsters, so hopefully nature will tone down the gruesome factor. After gawking at serpents scarfing--no! squeezing--down supper, wander through the museum's Living Lab and Animals of the World Conservation exhibits and natural science collections. But the lingering question: Why come all the way to McKinney to watch an armless, legless creature eat lunch? One: Snakes on a Plane takes on new meaning. Two: Your kids can finally get out of the house. Three: Everyone gets a better appreciation for wildlife. The event is capable of accommodating children with special needs. Wednesdays, 3 p.m. Starts: Aug. 12. Continues through Aug. 19, 2009
