In 1978, three passengers voyaged across the Atlantic, carried by the buoyant helium of a balloon. Although the feat would be far more impressive had that balloon been, say, the Elmo kind that you can purchase from Tom Thumb, their wind-swept journey was an unprecedented mark in hot air balloon history. The Double Eagle II floated from Maine to France in 137 hours. Thirty-one years later, the balloon tradition continues in our very own redneck of the woods, with the Lions Club Balloon Festival and Fair from Friday through Sunday. This annual family-style event pays homage to the fantastic awe of floating balloons while offering ground entertainment such as arts and crafts, a bounce house, a car bash, and raffle prizes. Festival-goers will kick off the day with a pancake breakfast and conclude their evening with performances from live bands, including the Joe Jonas Band and Cross Timbers Bluegrass. This three-day, all-day festival is free to the public and will be held in Highland Village. See hvballoonfest.com for further information, or call 972-539-0332.
