Ghostly Familiar

Until Zombies of the Opera chronicles the undead love for a stunning soprano, The Phantom of the Opera maintains its hold as my favorite stage production. We're talking favorite of all favorites, especially since seeing it at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, where Andrew Lloyd Webber's rendition opened in the '80s. So if you're like me and can't resist the Angel of Music's twisted love for Christine Daae, or the emotionally charged music or beautiful costumes, Garland Civic Theatre has the show for you. Considered by many to be inspiration for Webber's interpretation, Phantom, written by Tony Award winners Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit, transforms Gaston Leroux's original work into a delightfully epic splendor filled with lighthearted humor. The play premieres Sunday and runs until Saturday, September 12, at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. 5th St. in Garland. Tickets are $25 for Friday and Saturday evening performances and $23 for Thursday evenings and Saturday and Sunday matinees. Discounts are available for seniors, children, students, KERA members and DART riders. For more information, call 972-486-8884 or visit garlandcivictheatre.org.
Thursdays, 7:30 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2:30 p.m. Starts: Aug. 20. Continues through Sept. 12, 2009
