Maximum Potential

Lighting Their Fires: Raising Extraordinary Children in a Mixed-Up, Muddled-Up, Shook-Up World is Rafe Esquith's follow-up to Teach Like Your Hair Is on Fire. Both books instruct on how to get the most out of children. But I think it's telling that the titles both include the word "fire." As a parent and the spouse of a teacher, I'll attest that children will make that can of gasoline and box of matches awfully tempting. Nonetheless, the titles of Esquith's books probably aren't meant to be taken literally. He signs and discusses Lighting Their Fires 7 p.m. Wednesday at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, 9800 Preston Road.
Wed., Sept. 9, 7 p.m., 2009
