Sooner or Later

Many universities make a pretty penny off their sports programs, cultivating players and teams who unite and inspire their schools weekend after weekend, creating a space where academics and athletes alike can celebrate their respective strengths. And then there are places like Oklahoma University, where finding someone who can spell the phrase "critical thinking" is about as likely as being able to buy a cold beer with a reasonable alcohol point. But really, who cares about academic success on a beautiful early fall afternoon, while strapping young men in tight pants are bumping up against each other? You can always finish that essay after you watch OU's football team go up against Brigham Young University (please tell me someone's making Jesus vs. Joseph Bowl T-shirts) this weekend at Jerry Jones' Big Fun Shiny New Let's Forget About How We're Going to Pay for This Stadium. We're talkin' Oklahomans versus folks who rock out to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir! Oooh, maybe they'll robe up for halftime. Of course, it may take more than a good harmony to pull BYU out of their No. 20 rank, especially against No. 3 Oklahoma. The game's at 6 p.m. this Saturday at Cowboys Stadium, 1 Legends Way in Arlington. Tickets are $50 to $150. Call 214-373-8000.
Sat., Sept. 5, 6 p.m., 2009
