Round 2

Coulda sworn that The Black Monkwas a '70s kung fu flick starring Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, so it was a bit confusing when The Undermain Theatre announced the return of the play, claiming it was "back by popular demand." Surely I'd have remembered a stage adaptation of a cheesy martial-arts movie, because that's such an awesome idea. But as it turns out, it's an adaptation of Anton Chekhov's tragic novella of the same name, which tells the story of a philosophy student, his girlfriend and the haunting titular figure. It sounds OK, but hopefully from now on instead of redoing old philosophical plays, they'll start picking ones with nunchaku and Chinese stars and stuff. Performances are Wednesdays through Saturdays through October 3 at The Undermain Theatre, 3200 Main St. Visit www.undermain.org or call 214-747-5515 for tickets and showtimes.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8:15 p.m. Starts: Sept. 9. Continues through Oct. 3, 2009
