Though great fans of Muppets, it never really occurred to us to take puppets seriously. Sure, their cute songs offered preschool lessons (sharing, potty training), but puppets didn't strike us as something that adults would ever call thought-provoking. Then, 10 years ago, Charlie Kaufman wrote a film--Being John Malkovich--that changed our ideas about what puppetry could be. Sexual frustration, memory, human isolation, identity, self-control: In the film, these supremely adult, indubitably important topics were illuminated through the literal and metaphorical use of puppets. Do you have prejudices about what or for whom puppetry should be? Hip Pocket Theatre's Cowtown Puppetry Festival wants to challenge your assumptions with their closing weekend production, White Elephant--A Meditation on Transition, Memory and Release. See the show at 8:15 p.m. Thursday through Sunday at Hip Pocket Theatre, 1950 Silver Creek Road in Fort Worth. Call 817-246-9775 or visit hippocket.org.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8:15 p.m. Starts: Sept. 10. Continues through Sept. 20, 2009
