Spider Meet Pigs

I'm not sure which came first--reading Charlotte's Web or my overwhelming empathy for animals. Regardless, I am pretty sure that one begat the other, and they are both an integral part of who I am. E.B. White's classic and beloved 1952 novel tells the story of piglet Wilbur, who starts off as a doomed runt, but is saved after a passionate 8-year-old makes her case. Wilbur grows up to become doomed in a new way--as potential bacon. He forms an unlikely friendship with a spider named Charlotte, who comes up with a clever way to plead his new case. White's ideas of the secret lives of animals encompass a universal belief in empathy, bravery and love, no matter what form you might inhabit. Theatreworks USA presents Charlotte's Web at the Eisemann Center, 2351 Performance Drive in Richardson, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. A theatrical interpretation of the book, the production brings the characters to life for an afternoon that is ideal for everyone in the family, ages 5 and up. Tickets are $10 to $20.
