Why Would Mexican Girls Want to Fail High School?

Dear Mexican: As a teacher, we've been exhorted to expand our efforts in closing the achievement gap between majority and minority students (read: Anglos and Mexicans). I teach all of my students in the best ways that I can determine for each individual student, within the constraints of a classroom of 20 or more. In my 18 years, I have observed, on many occasions, Mexican girls choosing to fail their freshman year, in spite of obvious intelligence and interest in the subject. Several times, I have overheard Mexican boys seeming to tell the girls not to do well. I do not speak Spanish, but I am a very good observer. Upon further investigation into some of these instances, my observations were proven correct. You are obviously an erudite philosopher and student of Mexican society. Tell me why this happens, and what I can do to close the gap.

—Teacher

Dear Gabacho: Are you sure it wasn't the other way around? While Listening to Latinas: Barriers to High School Graduation, co-released this summer by the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the National Women's Law Center, found that the high school dropout rate for Latinas is 41 percent, it's a staggering 50 percent for boys (neither set, by the way, is the largest set of ethnic kiddies that drop out of high school, although it's damn close). But you asked about the chicas, and the study has recommendations: empanada-in-the-sky requests for more government spending, but also more concrete, doable steps like connecting girls with role models, eliminating discrimination in schools and involving parents in every step of the educational process. And while the dos groups do point the finger of failure toward the usual cultural cucuys such as immigration, uneducated parents and poverty, they also cite the more crucial factor of gender expectations from gabachos—in other palabras, teachers like yourselves, mere observers instead of interveners, deserve blame, también. But at least you want to help. The Mexican's advice: Get them to a nunnery, away from the corruptive leers of teenage boys, and emphasize the Reconquista isn't possible with a bola of uneducated pendejas.

As a transplant from New York, I've spent the past three years in Houston. I've lived most of my life around different cultures, especially Mexicans. We get along great! I happen to be a mix of Puerto Rican and Colombian. There is one thing I've never really understood about Mexicans, though. As recently as Labor Day weekend, my wife (a Mexican) and I were experiencing San Antonio. While having dinner in a Market Square restaurant, a mariachi band was playing at random tables. They began playing for a table of young Mexican men and women. Now, here is where the confusion kicks in: I don't understand why these young men felt the need to scream and cackle while the mariachi band played. I happen to love the music but find it so annoying when YOU PEOPLE ruin the song with your cries. Why do they do this? This continued for about 10 minutes in the middle of dinner, which was definitely ruined by their shenanigans.

Dear Boricua Paisa: Considering mariachi is OUR MUSIC, we can do whatever chingado we want while a group plays, and part of the music genre's rich tradition is the ronca, the piercing yelps most gabachos know as "Ay yai yai" from the refrain of the standard, "Cielito Lindo." Women can join in ronqueando, but it's mostly a macho thing, partly because a ronca is literally a mating call, but also because the emotive power of mariachi is supposed to turn men crazy, into drunken shouters, into sobbing messes—it's "Freebird" writ large, but replacing the onanistic guitar solo with trumpets. If you want a genteel evening, ask for a trio—another fine Mexican musical style, but one where the audience is supposed to be as well-behaved as the Centre Court crowd at Wimbledon.

To Anthony J: If you have all the things that you claim (and I hope that you do), you make the point of the sub-class types that hate by lashing out at the things they write or say. They may have a point but, it is mostly worn on top of their heads. Do not hate just because one doesent have the same rage as you do. Remember that if you have all the things that you claim then you have already won. Dont get mad at those that do not have much in life except to bash on ohters in order to feel superior. If you do not have what you say you do, then go out and get it and "STFU" until you do. "make it happen"

Dear Tater, that is exactly my point ! hillbillies named Tater ? come on people ! Mowing your lawn ? You most likely dont even own your own home ! Shut the f--- up already. its that hillbilly virus mentallity that keeps the south with its terrible reputation, but of course you cannot see that can you ? I am not mad about anything here, but just as it is the gringo's right to say or write whatever they feel like doing, then so is it my right as well, and don't forget, espescially all the mexican uncle toms out there. Stand up and stop being afriad of the white viruses. Dear Tater, I own three homes through out the states, have my own business, and 57 employees under me, I have amasters degree, and I am almost willing to bet you cant even speak correctly !

Concerned for our future. Anthony J. What a f*&^!#g racist douche. It's guys like Anthony (or is it really Antonio?) that keep Mexicans working the drive through window. If the America that the whitey built is so bad, why do you Messicans keep trying to swim over? Do you love lawn work that much? Your country is a corrupt, drug infested shithole. And you are rapidly turning Texas the same. With all the free education that your addled brain can handle, you chicos & chicas still don't take advantage of it. Your lack of education will keep La Raza mowing my yard for generations to come. Don't like what I just wrote? Then fix it- graduate high school and go to college. As it is you are only smart enough to serve on Dallas City Council.

I just want to mae a clarification on a statement that Anthony J. made:"Mexicans can speak two languages" Besides being bi-lingual(english-spanish). There are around 30 different languages and dialects that are spoken by Mexican people.

This comment is for Anthony J. If you are concerned for the future, then there isnt a very bright one ahead of you. You justify an attack on the gringo culture because you feel offended by their questioning of our culture and heritage. This is atypical of our race. You cannot rise your head above and see what is in front because you are too busy looking at the ground. Your feeling angry because of the way that other people look at us and question us. This is normal. Other people will always look upon us this way, it will never change. What can change is how you can look at yourself. What can we Mexicans do to better ourselves, our lives, our jobs, our communities, and our place in this world. I saw a sports program once where the reporter indicated: "dont hate the player, hate the game" The same applies to other people to include the "gringo" Remember: Help yoursef, Help your family, Help your community.

I am troubled by the commentary and opinion of the writer. I do at times agree on the subject matter that is presented but, not in the way that it is expressed. As a Mexican-American born and raised in Dallas, I think that alot of the Mexicans either legal or illegal fail to see beyond their pride(orgullo). It is very evedent to me that alot of the Mexican (legal and illegal) population demonstrate costumbre(custom) and not cultura(culture). I have lived in Mexico for many years and have an extensive knowledge of the Mexican culture. I will have you know that it is very diverse and colorful. I am disappointed to see or read how such a rich and diverse culture is pigeon holed by this writers comments. I see an obvious defensive reaction by the writer concerning any questions of the Mexican race and or their actions. In the above artical the writer tells the teacher that it is their fault for the high drop-out rate among Mexican students. I have yet to read that the writer acknowlodges a responsibility that Mexicans need to take for themselves. It is a two way steet my friend. I am almost certain that when this writer interviewed for the staff position, the person whom conducted the interview for the Observer was not asked the they must understand the Mexican culture in order to hire a qualiified writer on Mexican issues.

  • Anthony 10/22/2009 3:52:00 PM

Well it sounds to me like this is a forum to discuss the faults and or problems sorrounding Mexican people. You know there are so many topics for intelligent people to discuss but this is surely not one of them. Here is the thing, you bring up things that "YOU PEOPLE" (WHITIES) are uncomfortable with and then conplain to anyone who will listen instead of trying to understand and deal with issues at hand, you would much rather conplain and destroy with your mouth and actions. What a shame for your race ! When is there going to be enough of the seeing different colors, etc.. ? Quit calling yourselves (whites)intelligent when you continue to behave like this. The Mexican people have a culture and heritage that dates way way back my friend, but the whites are more or less mutts, they really have no culture to cling to or call there own therfore they really never learned any manners or human ettiquette and that is so prevelant through out the world. This is why the rest of the world cannot stand Americans, they view us all as white arrogant a--holes. It is not the mexicans or the blacks that they initially think of when they are upset with americans. What does that tell you ? White folks stop living in denial and face that you have your problems to conquer and stop hating and talking about others, espescially what you do not know. Remember this land we call united states belonged to the Mexican, Indian for the most part and good ole white mentality comes along and kills and steals once more through out your fantastic history of wrong doings, but I guess just like Roman Polanski, you feel if enough time goes by then it makes everything ok and forgotten.I live in Texas where there are white hillbillies everywhere and none of them can speak english worth a dam. At least the mexican people can speak two languages. Wake up, shut up, and educate yourselves Gringos! Dont feel because you are a so called teacher that it gives you the right to single out anyone and make such statements. Concerned for our future. Anthony J.
