Those Darlins

Thursday, October 29, at The Cavern

For a certain stripe of concert-going, PBR-drinking, Western-style shirt-wearing dude, Those Darlins shouldn't be a tough sell. Three cute, 20-something gals from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, play bass, guitar and ukulele and share the microphone, singing songs of wild nights and country pride.

What's not to love? "Wild One" has become the group's calling card and modus operandi—a short, forthright song of female independence with an undercurrent of coy sweetness. "Snaggletooth Mama" plays on Southern stereotypes and is redeemed by barroom piano and dirty Stax horns before the shtick can wear too thin. The song topics may not be groundbreaking, but Those Darlins have the chops, harmonies and (most important) the right sense of humor to pull it off with smirking style.

Female-fronted Aussie garage rock trio The Grates opens.
