There's more to Jewish humor than mother and matzo jokes. And comedian Elon Gold proves it. The modern Orthodox, yeshiva-educated Gold mixes religious and secular comedy to formulate a one-man shtick that is relatable even to those who think kippah is a fish. (It's actually another word for yarmulke.) Multiple credits (including The Mentalist, Frasier, Stacked and Cheaper by the Dozen) have made Gold one of the top comedians onscreen. But he's also a stand-up comic whose fast-selling shows include sharp monologues on Jewish tradition and culture, impersonations and, occasionally, bits that are "unsuitable for gentiles." He is an equal-opportunity comic. Gold's comedy gives unique twists to everyday life. His world view is communicated through absurd observations and by mocking conventions. But beneath the surface lies an acerbic social commentary. In other words, it's funny because it's true. But even with poking fun at stereotypes and including an obscenity here and there, Gold hasn't abandoned his roots. He faithfully hosts a Chabad (Jewish educational and community center) telethon in California each year.
