Can a Good Democrat Vote for Perry?

True confessions: Many of us carry some secret shame, a memory of youthful indiscretion that we'd rather no one else know. Maybe you shoplifted or felt up a cousin at a family reunion. Hey, it's cool. We understand. Even Buzz has an ugly secret, but since we have no shame, we'll share it with you: We voted Republican. Once.

Look, it was 1980. We were 18, and it was our first time. It was a choice between Ronald Reagan or Jimmy Carter. We felt dirty afterward and have never done it again.

Lately, however, a siren song has been calling us to the dark side. Buzz is seriously considering voting in the GOP primary next March. Why? Well, a poll published this week in the new online journal The Texas Tribune found that Governor Rick Perry is leading Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison by 12 percentage points in the GOP gubernatorial primary. Both Hutchison and Perry are polling far better than any potential Democratic candidate. In red-state Texas, that means we could end up with four more years with the poster boy for conservative wing nuts in the governor's mansion. So, we're seriously considering voting for...for...oh, don't make Buzz say the name. We're thinking of voting for her just to avoid Perry.

Yeah. It's effed up. Try saying this with a straight face: Kay Bailey Hutchison, the progressives' choice.

Obviously, we needed a little spiritual guidance in this matter (Pray the GOP away!), so we called Dallas County Democratic Party chair Darlene Ewing and asked her if this might be a good plan. We were shocked, shocked by what she said. First, with several contested local Democratic races on next spring's ballot, she'd rather Democrats not party-switch at all. Second, if voters decide they must, she suggests voting for Perry.

What?

Perry's drive to the hard, hard right has fuzzied up Hutchison's image, Ewing says, but don't be fooled. "She's totally conservative."

"Our chances statewide are better if Perry is the candidate," Ewing says. "Everybody thinks Kay Bailey is this moderate [but] she voted with Bush 95 percent of the time...Vote for Perry because it gives the Democrats a chance."

Ewing is a bit of a gambler, it seems, willing to risk four more years of Perry for a better shot of taking the whole prize. But vote for Perry?

"We all have to make sacrifices," Ewing says.

You know, maybe we'll cancel our grand strategy and just stick with the Democratic primary. Like Meat Loaf says: We'll do anything for love, but we won't do that.

No, a good Democrat cannot vote for Republican since there is no such thing as a "good Democrat".

  • Arnie 11/09/2009 6:12:00 AM

Here's a novel idea. Why not just cast an honest vote for the candidate of your choice?

Just what has Rick Perry done since he has been gov. Tx ranks near the bottom in ed., child care, health care, highest ins prem, highest utility bills. Yet he will stanad on the Rio Grande and say we need to have the TX Nat'l Guard on the border but after the election he does nothing. Let's vote him out.

While I in no way condone voting for one person because you think they are easier to beat later, I still think that Voting for Hutchinson is the democrats best bet. Democrats won't win Texas Governer. Period. But we might win a US Senator seat. If we kick Perry out, then that will open up the Senator's seat. That would be an open field and we might be able to win that one.

While some may think it a neat strategy to vote for KBH to sabotage Perry's campaign, it will backfire. It may have been ok when there was only one Democratic candidate, but now we have no less than 4 and possibly 5. It is important to vote in the Dem primary and choose the best possible choice to face these Republicans who could care less about progressive values. Personally, that choice for me is Hank Gilbert.

It's sad but I am thinking of doing the exact same thing. I cannot stand the thought of another Perry term. He's worse than Bush and twice as shifty. Anyone but Perry is my motto. You can't do better than that in Texas for now. Kay Bailey is worthless, to be sure, but at least she's not Perry.

The question is, "Can a good [ANYTHING/ANYONE] vote for either one of them?" Talking of deep political shames from 1980, I'm sorry to say that as a teen I helped my mom stuff envelopes for KBH. In my defense, I truly was too young to know better. After all, it's only now that she's in government office that she has the microphone to make hateful and demagogic statements against groups that her polling shows her the base virulently despises; back in the day, who really knew what she'd say to get (and stay) elected? Then there's Perry, who seems determined to prove that it's possible for a governor to make Texans more ashamed of their state than GWB managed to do. (Can't tell you HOW many conversations I used to have with "furriners" when I lived out of state, trying to explain how people from my area could have elected the kind of jackass governor who didn't seem to think any amount of criminal-level malfeasance and malpractice by defense attorneys should keep us from frying people. Why don't death-penalty supporters ever realize how that kind of irrationality hurts the solidity of their cause?) The man seems almost proud to pull garbage like cutting insurance programs for children of the working poor. The better thing to do is to get opposition parties to put up the best candidates they can, then actually get behind them, the way the Dems failed to do with their last guy. The self-same Republican-fundraiser parents who had me stuffing envelopes for KBH were far more impressed by Chris Bell in the debate than by any of his competition, but it was far too late and the national Democrat leadership once again blew a great chance by assuming they had none at all. One of the many reasons I could never be a Dem, either - sure would be nice if we could get some worthwhile third, fourth and fifth parties in this country instead of the pathetic also-rans. It's one of the few things I ever envy about other countries' political systems.

Ms. Ewing is assuming the Democratic candidate would beat Perry...that's not going to happen. Nor will that candidate beat KBH. The race for Gov. will be decided in March, not November, and if you want to get rid of Prick Perry, you vote for KBH as the (vastly) lesser of 2 evils.

  • Karen 11/05/2009 6:57:00 PM

Ewing is right. Vote for Perry to make sure we don't have another Republican in.

  • Anne Lindsey 11/05/2009 6:02:00 AM

Even as an Aggie, I will not vote for Perry. I will also not vote for KBH. First of all, there needs to be a term limit on governor. Second of all, there needs to be a legimate candidate that represents all the citizens of Texas. Every election it's upper class representatives from million dollar subdivisions campaigning to claim to represent all Texans. Even Kinky is a joke, because, let's face it, he makes it one. The Democratic party in Texas is real, and it is strong, with hard working people who represent the working class in this state. We deserve real representation we do not receive under Perry or Hutchinson. We deserve a candidate who is taking this seriously and not making a mockery of us. Surely someone in Texas is up to the task of taking this election seriously and undertaking a run at the office of Governor.

  • 1hotshon 11/05/2009 3:21:00 AM

Well written! Even in reading her argument on why a vote for Perry could be in the Democrats favor long-term, I'm just not convinced. I think a republican will take it anyway due to Obama whiplash so I'll run the risk with KBH.
