The so-called "hiatus" of VH1's Best Week Ever left a hole in my heart the size of the pothole that I slammed into on Skillman last night. I'll make do with BWE's slightly more intellectual counterpart (Current TV's excellent InfoMania), but I deeply miss my weekly dose of Paul F. Tompkins-hosted commentary on everything pop culture. For months, I've been left to wonder what the cadre of BWE comedians would have had to say about the latest goings-on in the inane world of celebrity journalism and reality television. Surely Doug Benson, the king of joyful sarcasm, would have had a field day with the subtle demise of the Jon and Kate Gosselin marriage in his recurring Doug Benson: Pop Culture Bachelor segment. And to deny us of an analysis of Transformers 2 in Benson's Eight Words or Less reviews? Damn VH1. Benson's gleeful stoner persona and smart-ass pop culture observations were a bright spot in the reality show-infested waters of the schlocky station's Friday-night lineup. But all is not lost--Benson is making the rounds on a stand-up comedy tour that stops at Hyena's Comedy Club in Mockingbird Station, 5321 E. Mockingbird Lane, at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. This performance is free, but reservations are recommended. The 2007 finalist on Last Comic Standing and creator of The Marijuana-logues will also perform at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. on Friday and at 8 and 10:30 p.m. on Saturday. Those shows require $10 admission.
