Of All The Gin Joints

The themes of sacrifice and escape pulse through the heart of the classic of all classic films: Casablanca. The romanticism of sacrificing for love in the midst of war is narcotic, as is the tantalizing promise of escaping the ties that bind. There's a whisper of everyone's life in Casablanca. It's in the longing on Ingrid Bergman's face as she asks, "Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By.'" And in the resolved sadness saturating Humphrey Bogart's voice as he utters the film's iconic line, "Here's looking at you, kid." According to Hollywood lore, the script was written from day to day, so no one knew how the movie would end until Bogart, in trench coat and fedora, stood wreathed in fog on a runway. Casablanca cemented the fame of Bogart and Bergman, yet they never shared the screen again. Perhaps it was for the best, because any other screen couple would pale in comparison to Rick and Ilsa. We'll always have Paris. The Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane at Inwood, is hosting midnight screenings of Casablanca Friday and Saturday.
