Toadies, LIONS, Descender

Wednesday, December 30, at Trees

2008 saw The Toadies triumphantly return to the music world with the release of its surprisingly still-in-form No Deliverance. 2009, meanwhile, saw even more successes from the band as it continued to tour the country, playing on both the club and festival circuits. The latter seemed to prove especially fruitful. At this past fall's Austin City Limits Music Festival, the Toadies' Sunday afternoon performance was among the weekend's biggest draws, with fans packed shoulder to shoulder, singing along just as emphatically to new songs such as "Song I Hate" and "So Long Lovely Eyes" as they did to classic cuts like "Possum Kingdom" and "Tyler."

As the band rings in 2010, it's showing very little signs of slowing down. Then there's this: Though the band has only officially released three studio albums in its 15-plus-year career, frontman Vaden Todd Lewis has said in interviews that the band is considering heading back into the studio in the near future—which could spell the end of the normal seven-year between-album waiting period implied by the band's history. No doubt that's good news for fans.

So, too, is this: This show comes as just the first of two as part of the hometown heroes' two-night New Year's Eve residency at its old Deep Ellum haunt, Trees. This night pairs the band with Austin-based hard rockers LIONS and Dallas' own Descender, the new project from Lewis' former Burden Brothers bandmate Casey Hess. True fans, however, will hunker down for both of the back-to-back nights of this celebration. Night Two, which comes on New Year's Eve, replaces LIONS and Descender with local rock favorites Dove Hunter and The Boom Boom Box.
