The Prince everyone will remember is the one immortalized in Purple Rain, the 1984 cult favorite that produced one of the best-selling soundtracks ever. The film sees Prince at the height of his '80s glam phase: the poufy near-mullet, the purple suit, the dark eyeliner and the ruffled blouse (Dave Chappelle, that's your cue). Most of the songs in the movie were recorded live instead of dubbed, and many are Prince classics that belong on every iPod: "Purple Rain," "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy" and "I Would Die for You." Prince, as The Kid, is a talented Minneapolis musician who roars around on a motorcycle, romances a hot little number named Apollonia, and generally shoots a lot of smoldering looks into the camera. The conflict revolves around The Kid's abusive father, his battle with a rival musician and his refusal to sing the movie's titular song. But he does in the end, because he's Prince. So after partying like its 1999 on New Year's Eve, shake off that hangover and go to a midnight showing at the Inwood, 5458 W. Lovers Lane, this Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $10.
